The aircraft belonging to No.18 Operational Training Unit had taken off from Bramcote on a cross-country navigation exercise. At some point the aircraft encountered carburettor icing and was partially abandoned, leaving the aircraft to crash at Wilford, Nottingham, just South of the River Trent.
